about
Sophyline is a writer, filmmaker, performer and visual artist from smack dab in the middle of Arkansas; West Pulaski county to be exact. Growing up in what felt like nowhwere, Soph learned to make the fun herself, especially in light of heavy involvement with the Christian church. In an evagelical household, some things weren’t allowed. Soph and her younger sibling had to get creative to find stories, games, and activities to make their time in a hyper-religious house feel less restrictive.
Sophyline graduated from the University of Central Arkansas with a B.A. in Digital Filmmaking, where she was also able to participate in the school’s Honors college and complete an undergraduate thesis project entitled “Fish: Positionality through Scene Design, Performance and Exhibition Format in Avant-Garde Romance.” This project allowed to explore some of her past relationship trauma as well as her movement toward more experimental and concept-based themes, outside of a strictly narrrative context. Her film and video work is rooted in themes of identity exploration and experimentation, queerness & sexuality, girlhood, fear, desire, shame, relationships and creation.
In the world of filmmaking, Sophyline is attached to art department work, particularly costuming, production design, and art direction. These are the primary elements of any of her film work; the scene, the location and the adornments are most important to the creation of her stories and her images. Her focus in video art is everything we see in frame - how can chaos and detail mix to make a truly immersive narrative experience.
